In people living with a brain tumour, additional steroids are often prescribed in tablet form. They help to reduce the swelling (oedema) and inflammation sometimes caused by brain tumours. Steroids regulate emotions such as excitement and nervousness.

  • However, rates of return visits and/or readmissions were similar, and there was no additional benefit from combining the two drugs.
  • For most people, steroid inhalers and steroid injections shouldn’t cause any bad side effects.

Your cancer type

Please ask your doctor for more information about immunisations. If you need to take both medications, you may be given a medication called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Corticosteroids can sometimes interact with a type of medication known as protease inhibitors (like ritonavir).

  • At your annual asthma review, your GP or asthma nurse can talk to you about your risk and what you can do to reduce this risk.
  • You need to take all five tablets at one time in the morning with food and they should not be taken as individual tablets throughout the day.
  • Never stop your steroids suddenly without speaking to a healthcare professional.
  • Your dose will probably be reduced gradually as your symptoms improve, or your doctor might suggest a weaker medication.
  • I felt so bloated and heavy from the steroids, I didn’t recognise myself anymore.

You might also be given a drug called a proton pump inhibitor or another medicine to protect your stomach. If you’ve taken steroid tablets for more than a few days, they can cause side effects known as withdrawal symptoms if you stop suddenly. You might be given a small dose, known as a maintenance dose, for a long time to make sure your symptoms don’t return.

Growth problems in children

Other steroid injections take around a week to become effective but can ease your symptoms for two months or longer. These are described as less soluble, because the drug takes longer to get into your system. Artificial steroids act like natural steroids to reduce inflammation.

Some people feel happier than usual while others feel low in mood, short-tempered and irritable. Some people feel low or flat for several days to weeks after they stop taking steroids, as it takes a while for your body to begin making its own steroids naturally again. Health professionals who are not specialists in MS, including some GPs and A&E staff, may not realise that a high dose of steroids is needed to treat a relapse.

It is unlikely that your child will have side-effects if they only take prednisolone for a few days. They are more likely to get side-effects if they are on a high dose, have extra doses or take prednisolone for a long time. Your doctor will use the lowest possible dose for as little time as possible to avoid side-effects. If a woman needs to take steroid tablets whilst she is breastfeeding, prednisolone is usually recommended.

Your doctor may reduce your dose or suggest taking your tablets less often (for example, every other day) if you’re having side effects. Your doctor will be able to provide more advice about how to safely stop taking steroids. Taking too many steroid tablets over a long period can make you more likely to get side effects.

For example, steroid tablets and steroids given intravenously (into a vein) can make you more prone to developing infections such as colds, chickenpox, shingles and measles. Steroids are usually given in short courses of a few days or a few weeks. Keep taking your steroids for as long as your specialist tells you to.
